Jane Winfield was born in Seattle, Washington and currently lives and works in Charleston, South Carolina where she teaches painting and drawing courses at the College of Charleston. She received her MFA in Painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2012, and her BFA in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2006. At VCU, she received the Chair’s Award of Excellence in Painting. Since then, much of her work has been acquired by the permanent collection at the Savannah College of Art and Design and she has participated in group shows at ArtSpace, Plant 0, FAB Gallery, Gallery 5, The Bankquet Place, and The Anderson Gallery in Richmond, Virginia, as well as group shows in South Korea, and most recently, her first solo show in Savannah, Georgia.
Using an array of painting and drawing techniques, Winfield employs the full spectrum of mark-making vocabulary to strengthen the intrigue between the medium and the subject, and between the viewer and the painting itself. The variety of marks and materials is meant to correspond directly with the images they construct, resulting in a broad range of moods, surfaces, and opportunities for interpretation.
“These images stem from a searching, playful way of grappling with concepts of dimension; imagined places where space and volume are interchangeable.” – Jane Winfield
